How do we know what we should and shouldn't be prioritizing?
In order to better ourselves and continue to move forward in life, are there certain things we should prioritize over others? Certain tasks and aspects of our daily lives that might yield better results than what we are currently doing?
The answer to these questions is yes, but it all depends on YOU, your goals, and your dreams for your future. These things decide what our priorities should be. If you've been following along for the past 2 weeks, you should have a future goal in mind that you are ready to start working towards.
Write that goal down on a sheet of paper right now.
The Priority List
Take that sheet of paper and write down what you do each day, everything from when you wake up in the morning to when you go to bed at night. If you do different things each day, make that list as well.
Now, read through your list and mark each thing you see as a priority in your day. Priorities are non-negotiable tasks, the things you never ever skip doing. Once you have those marked, put a check mark next to the tasks that pertain SPECIFICALLY to your end goal. How many are there? 1? None?
If your list contains tasks each day that pertain specifically to your end goal, that is great! You are on the right track. But, if it doesn't, don't get discouraged, you just need to move somethings around and possibly build some new habits.
Let's make a list of the tasks/habits/or behaviors that WILL help you reach your goals. What are the daily habits you need to form in order to reach your set goal? Take a look at both lists and see where you can align them. Is there a Netflix watching hour that could be converted into an exercise session or reading time? (these are just examples). Are there several drive through or restaurant meals that could be made and enjoyed at home instead?
I Don't Have Time (and other excuses we use to avoid prioritizing new things)
In the phrase above, try replacing "don't" with "won't" and see how the sound of those words makes you feel. In some instances, you may not feel anything, but if there is an instance where you feel "guilt", think about why you feel that way? It could be because this thing you won't make time for is actually something you should be prioritizing in order to reach your goal!
Things Take Time
Please don't think that you are going to be able to change your priorities over night. You aren't. And please don't misunderstand the point here. You can still have goal oriented priorities without sacrificing work and a social life! It just takes time to learn to balance. Each time you find yourself needing to prioritize something new, give yourself time to learn the new habit. And then, give yourself GRACE in making it a true priority. There will be times when you want to scroll social media instead of make content for your own brand. And that is OKAY as long as you don't let it overtake your focus.
Balance is the key to a lot of things in life. Learning to balance your priorities is a valuable skill that will allow you happiness, flexibility, and success.
