Trust the Process: Take Action



January 2020.


It's the start of a new year and a new decade all at once. We don't want to know about your New Year's resolutions, instead we want you to ask yourself one question.


Do I have control over my life?


For most of us the answer is "no". We take on this powerless mentality and instead let our lives be dictated by the things happening around us (or to us). This year instead of a resolution, we want to challenge you to take control of your life. Stop letting outside forces dictate the decisions you make or the emotions that you feel.


Agency

Definition: When a person acts on their own behalf.


To have a sense of agency, means to have a sense of power or control over yourself. Agency allows us to think for ourselves, to make decisions based on our wants or needs, agency allows us to stand up for ourselves in any given situation. If you don't have a sense of agency, now is the time to take it.


It Starts With Taking Action


Taking action starts with choosing what you want to get out of each day.


Do you want to wake up earlier? Stop hitting snooze on your alarm clock! The minute it goes off, swing your feet over the side of your bed and sit up. Sounds easy enough, but you're right, it's not. Whether you get up with that alarm or not is a choice you make. Nothing more.


Do you want to have a good day at work? Make a conscious choice to stop complaining about menial tasks or whatever it is that you tend to complain about. Instead, just do the task and try to reframe how you think about it. Tell yourself how productive it is that you are getting this done!


Do you wish you ate better or workout out more? Those actions are your choice too! You have to choose to do them! Book a class, look up a fun, heathy recipe, grocery shop on the outer perimeter of the store.


ALL of these are actions that YOU have to choose. No one else can do this for you.


Replace Can't with Won't


Next time you think "I can't" insert action + excuse here". Replace the "can't" in that sentence with "won't". This will allow you to see that this is actually a choice you are making. Nothing is stopping you from doing whatever the action is except for you.


Your finances are not stopping you. You are choosing not to manage your money to allow yourself to take the action.


Your job is not stopping you. You are choosing not to make time when you aren't working.


Your size, weight, abilities are not stopping you. You are using these things as excuses to avoid doing the action that is going to get you your desired result.


You Decide


Sometimes, the actions that we need to take are not something that we want to do, but they are important steps to get us to our desired result. This is when you must decide what you want. You make the decision to take the action everyday that is going to change your life for the better, or you can make the choice to avoid the action and remain exactly where you are now.


Change is a choice. Live your life with intention. Come up with a plan (even small ones) and execute those actions every single day. If you do this, you will start to see results. But you must take action, you must be the one in control.


You control your mood, your emotions, and your actions. No one and nothing else can, unless you take on the powerless mentality and let them.


Take control of your life. Start living for yourself. Start taking action towards your dreams.
